The idea came from a genuinely frustrating afternoon in 2023. Someone was trying to follow a Japanese milk bread recipe that listed everything in grams, and their kitchen scale had just run out of battery. The recipe was beautiful. The conversion math was not. After the third time opening a new browser tab to look up how many grams are in three-quarters of a cup of bread flour, it became obvious that this was a problem worth solving properly.
The first version of Dawn Ember Meadow was rough. It handled the obvious units fine but fell apart on things like fluid ounces versus weight ounces, or tablespoons of honey versus tablespoons of water. Those edge cases took months to get right, and honestly some of them required going back to first principles about ingredient density. The extension you install today is the result of that work. It is not just a lookup table. It understands context.
Ready to cook without the math?
Add to ChromeIt works on the vast majority of recipe pages. If a site formats its ingredients as plain text or standard HTML, Dawn Ember Meadow can read and convert them. A small number of sites use unusual markup that the extension can't parse yet. If you find one, send us the URL and we'll look at adding support.
It's free. There's no premium tier, no subscription, no account to create. The extension was built to solve a specific problem, and the solution doesn't require charging anyone for it. You can check the Chrome Web Store listing to confirm there are no in-app purchases.
No noticeable impact. The extension is lightweight by design. It only activates when you click the button, so it's not running any background processes while you browse normally.
Yes. Click the button again and the page reverts to whatever units it originally showed. You can toggle back and forth as many times as you need while you're cooking.
For volume-to-weight conversions, the extension uses standard reference densities for common ingredients. It's accurate for most baking and cooking purposes. If you're working with something unusual, a kitchen scale is still the most reliable tool for weight-critical steps.
Dawn Ember Meadow is currently available for Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers (including Edge and Brave). You can install it directly from the Chrome Web Store. A Firefox version is something we're considering for a future release.
